Manchester Golf Club

The Manchester Golf Club is amongst the oldest and most prestigious Golf Clubs in the North West of England. Formed in 1882 by eight expatriate Scotsmen, its early Members played their golf over layouts at Manley Park and then Trafford Park before moving to the current location at Hopwood Park in 1912. Since then, the Club has become widely known for the character of its golf course and the hospitality of its staff and Members. The 18 hole par 72 course offers a challenge to golfers of all ages and abilities and affords magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The Club offers superb facilities including Championship standard golf course, a comfortable and attractive Clubhouse, first-class cuisine, an extensive driving range, spacious car parking and a location adjacent to junction 20 of the M62 motorway, north of Manchester. Whether they be Society members, Corporate Day guests, or casual green-fee paying golfers, visitors to Hopwood are always made most welcome.

Hopwood is a popular venue on the North West Open event circuit. The Club plays host to hundreds of visitors in its renowned Festival Week, when a series of Open competitions are played back to back over six days in late July / early August. Ladies, Seniors, Juniors and Mixed are all accommodated in their own Opens during the course of the golfing season.

The Course

Hopwood Park is a golf course of distinctive if not unique quality. Predominantly moorland in character, but with heathland and parkland features, it offers a wide variety of holes and is set in a vast 245 acres, affording panoramic views of the Pennines.

The superb 18 hole, par 72 course was designed by Harry Shapland Colt, perhaps the most gifted golf course architect of the 20th century and responsible for the likes of Wentworth, Sunningdale New, Royal Lytham & St Anne’s and Pine Valley, amongst countless others. It is nearly 6,500 yards in length with an SSS of 72, a fair challenge for handicap golfers of all standards.

The course consistently features in the ‘Best of …’ golf guides, has played host to various prestigious events (including the Lancashire Amateur Championship and PGA European Tour Qualifiers), and is widely considered to be one of the finest inland courses in the North West of England.
